Do you guys think I should get my masters for NP. My science GPA is great 3.7 but my nursing GPA is very low. Making my average 2.75. Is there even a chance for me to be able to get into CRNA school?

Hey, so first of all, your’e not alone in your situation here. I can’t give you a yes or no answer on your NP because there is more to it than just your GPA. Here are my thoughts:

CRNA Programs Weigh Science Heavily – Many schools prioritize looking at your science class grades heavily, so this is huge that you have such a high science GPA. We need to know why your Nursing GPA was low, meaning, what classes did you get less than a B in, and were any of them core science classes.

Other Application Strengths – NETWORKING/AANA Events, Exceptional ICU experience, CCRN certification, strong letters of recommendation, and a well-written personal statement can all help offset a lower GPA.

Choose Your Schools Strategically – You need to attend open houses/virtual QA sessions to understand how each program you’re looking at will analyze your GPA. Many programs look at your overall GPA instead of your nursing GPA. Also, some look at the last 60 credits. I would choose your schools strategically and avoid ones that look at your Nursing GPA specifically. Look at the GPA/Prereq videos in the Learning Library for more on this topic, and filter the School Database by GPA type.

    • So my questions:
      1. When you save average, do you mean overall GPA? What about your Last 60 credits GPA? Have you taken any graduate level courses, or do you plan to?
      2. Have you picked your programs yet? And if so, have you reached out to them specifically to discuss this (or plan to attend an open house or event)?
      3. Do you plan to attend an AANA event or other type of in-person networking event?

Lastly, getting your MSN isn’t a bad idea at all, but I can’t vote for or against it without knowing how the rest of your application is looking!
