What type of ICU is BEST for CRNA School?
This is always a hot topic when applying to CRNA school! In my experience, I don’t think programs strictly prefer one ICU background over another. I’m in a large cohort of over 100 students, and while many of us come from CVICU (myself included!), we also have classmates from PICU, Neuro ICU, MICU, SICU—even Flight Nurses with strong ICU backgrounds.
While there may not be a “preferred” ICU type, I will say my CVICU experience gave me an edge when it came to topics like hemodynamics and PA catheter tracings. It also made understanding cardiac pharmacology—like vasopressors—a little more intuitive.
That said, it’s not a competition. Every ICU brings unique strengths to the table. CVICU just happened to help me in certain areas.
What about you—what’s your ICU background?
