It's important to understand some things before applying to CRNA school. Well, not only important but honestly expected. There are things you need to be aware of before you press "submit". In fact, you might be asked about some of these things during your interview.

Understanding the CRNA Role

While CRNAs share similarities with advanced practice nurses, their focus is distinct. Unlike nurse practitioners who manage multiple patients, CRNAs typically provide one-on-one care throughout surgeries. They perform essential procedures like inserting catheters and intubations, playing a vital role in anesthesia delivery. Notably, CRNAs can practice independently in some states (opt-out states).

Shadowing CRNAs allows for a deeper understanding of this specialized role. Aim for at least 24 hours of shadowing experience, with some programs seeking applicants closer to 40 hours.

The CRNA profession actively advocates for increased practice independence through legislation promoting opt-out states. This political landscape impacts the profession and may be a topic in application essays or interviews. Familiarize yourself with the current climate by attending CRNA association meetings or researching online resources provided by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).

The Role of CRNAs in Healthcare

CRNA practice independence can lead to lower healthcare costs and increased access to anesthesia care, especially in rural areas. Studies show that having anesthesiologists supervise CRNAs, compared to independent practice, can inflate healthcare costs. Additionally, CRNAs play a crucial role in addressing the shortage of anesthesia providers, ensuring better access to care in underserved communities.
