Stand Out in CRNA School Applications

BUT FIRST, GRAB SOME FREE GOODIES:

Deciding to apply to nurse anesthesia school is scary. You are competing against thousands of competitive critical care nurses nationwide. I know I had self-doubt. What would make me different? How would I stand out? I never will know for sure, but here is what I believe helped me get selected by my top-picked nurse anesthesia program.

Education and Certifications: Build a Strong Foundation

I am a learning magnet. My first bachelor’s degree was in Biology, which showed I could manage a heavy science-based class load. My master’s in nursing education showed my dedication to the profession. I completed additional certifications outside what was required, such as the certified emergency nurse. Participating in the ELEVATE leadership in diversity academy displaced my commitment to serve as a future leader in the nurse anesthesia profession.

Unit Involvement: Be a Change Agent

I am a change agent. The most memorable moment in my career was getting selected to present at the 2020 Emergency Nurse Association conference. The work was speared from my involvement in committees. I participated in the hospital throughput council, allowing me to foster relationships with senior leaders. I also sat on the sepsis committee as the nurse chair. This enabled me to improve communication between nurses and physicians, which I discussed in my personal statement. Lastly, serving as the magnet department co-leader, I learned about accreditation and, most importantly, getting others involved in change.

Clinical Background: Showcase Your Experience

I have solid clinical experience. Most of my critical care training was at one of the nation’s top hospitals, in the Medical Intensive Care Unit. I cared for some of the sickest patients who were often on continuous renal replacement therapy, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, and vasoactive medications—my 12 years of nursing experience allowed me to work at over 20 hospitals. This demonstrated my ability to adapt to change and work competently in an unfamiliar environment. I held various leadership positions, including assistant clinical director, assistant nurse manager, and administrative supervisor. These roles demonstrated my ability to remain calm under pressure, something nurse anesthetists do daily.

Conclusion: Going Beyond the Basics

It’s hard to say if these items secured my seat in my top-pick nurse anesthesia program. However, an applicant needs to go well beyond the minimal requirements. Think about it. You are competing against the top critical care nurses; how exactly will you stand out?
