What will set you apart as a CRNA school applicant? Your application essay. 1000%. The real answer? It’s how you show your unique value and experiences (not just a list of jobs). That’s the stuff that pops. Not GPA, not what’s “expected.” The secret sauce? Standing out as a CRNA school applicant is all about your story. and how you tell it.
How to Actually Stand Out: Make Your Essay Unskippable
Okay, real talk. Admissions committees have seen a million essays. Same “passionate about anesthesia” line. That’s not it. The CRNA Club fam (us, hi) has been up since 3am reading these things, cold pizza in hand, and we know what makes us stop and actually read.
- Be specific about your weird, messy journey. Got 200+ shadowing hours? Worked night shift forever? Survived (barely) the worst semester ever? OWN IT.
- Show your resume boosters. Look, Ep 9 of our podcast. “3 Resume boosters for your CRNA School application”. covers this, but think: CERTIFICATIONS, RESEARCH, LEADERSHIP. We break it down in our Learning Library (free trial, seriously just check it out).
- Don’t hide the ugly. Gaps in your work history? Bombed a class? Don’t wait for them to ask. Address it. We talk about all the things we wish we’d done differently in Ep 2 (“3 things I would have done differently BEFORE applying to CRNA school”).
- Tell them why you actually care. Leadership, advocacy, plans to teach, whatever. Even if it’s not in the prompt, weave it in. Show you actually give a crap about more than just getting in. (The “Program Requirements” lesson covers how to sneak this in, by the way.)
Need to see the full list of what CRNA programs want? Here's our CRNA School Requirements guide.
What Should You Leave Out of Your Essay?
You ever read something so generic you forget what you were doing mid-sentence? Yep. Let’s NOT do that. Here’s the quick-and-dirty list straight from our all-nighter group texts.
- Personal stuff that isn’t relevant. Religion, orientation, family drama. Only mention if it’s tied directly to your story (like, you worked with underserved populations. then cool, it fits). If not, skip it.
- Don’t be that “I’m the best” person. Arrogance? Nope. Sell yourself, but with receipts and humility. Ep 9 breaks this down. Honestly, this is what gets you side-eyed, not noticed.
- No filler words. “I am a lifelong learner.” YAWN. If your friends would roast you for saying it out loud, don’t write it. Just… don’t.
Extra Credit: You’re More Than Your Essay
Not to stress you out, but there’s more to this process than just the essay. Programs want the whole package (and not everyone tells you that). If you’re lost on what schools are actually looking for, Ep 1 of our podcast (“What CRNA Schools are REALLY looking for in an applicant”) is just… required listening. Seriously, throw it on during your commute.
- Check out the “Communicating Value Add” lesson in our Learning Library. It’s all about showing off your strengths without being a robot.
- Double check the How to Become a CRNA page for step-by-step sanity checks. (So you don’t miss something obvious. Like, we’ve all done it.)
- And use our free Timeline Generator so you don’t end up cramming everything into one caffeine-fueled weekend.

Our Final Thoughts
Look, this is stressful and it’s easy to overthink every word. But honestly? Your story. the real, unfiltered version. is what sets you apart as a CRNA school applicant.
Don’t be afraid to get personal, share the mess, and go deeper than the cliches. Start early, rewrite a million times, ask for real feedback (not just from your mom). And let The CRNA Club (that’s us!) help you out. whether you’re binging our podcasts, digging into the Learning Library, or just need help with deadlines. You 1000% got this.
