Why We Love Being CRNAs: Insights and Inspiration for Aspiring CRNA Applicants
In This Article (6 sections)

Why do we love being CRNAs? Honestly, being a CRNA is this wild mix of autonomy, challenge, and actually helping people (like, really helping). It’s hard. It’s rewarding. And yeah, 1000% worth it for those who vibe with the chaos.

What Makes Being a CRNA Actually Awesome?

If you’ve ever spent a 12-hour shift feeling like a magician and a detective rolled into one, you get it. CRNAs basically have to be a nurse, pharmacist, mini-intensivist, and even the unofficial therapist for families (on zero sleep, with cold pizza at 3am). That’s the gig. And weirdly? We love it.

  • Total ownership. You’re running the show in the OR.
  • Insane variety. OB one day, open heart the next (sometimes both in a 24).
  • Real impact. You see the difference you make, even if your hair is doing that frizzy post-call thing.
  • If you want the no-filter scoop, Ep 1 of The CRNA Club Podcast (Spotify) spills what CRNA schools are actually looking for.

We’re all about the messiness and the magic. Want the basics? Our Learning Library’s Profession Overview and CRNA History + Types of Anesthesia lessons are a good place to start.

What Career Paths Can You Choose as a CRNA?

It’s not just one job. It’s dozens. We legit never get bored. Some of us are working peds cases, some doing pain management, some in tiny rural hospitals where you have to know everything (no pressure). Others are per diem and picking their shifts for a better life outside the hospital. Because sanity matters.

  • NICU, peds, trauma, outpatient, OB, flight… (you name it, we have a CRNA there)
  • Flexible schedules. Like, real flexibility. Not “flexible…if the schedule gods allow”
  • Urban, rural, VA, private, academic, travel gigs. bring your own snacks
  • Want the full rundown? Check out How to Become a CRNA and CRNA School Requirements.
  • And the Learning Library’s Salary lesson if you’re nosy like us.

We’ve got a free School Database to help you compare programs. so you don’t end up somewhere random because your friend picked it. (Been there.)

What’s the Real Day-to-Day? Heavy Responsibility, Big Rewards

Let’s be real. Sometimes it’s overwhelming. Ever have that moment where your hands are literally shaking after a massive case? Same. It’s life-and-death, sometimes. But when it goes right (and it mostly does), there’s nothing like it.

  • You’re running anesthesia, troubleshooting, charting (ugh), and making split-second calls.
  • Families trust you with everything. Sometimes they cry, sometimes you do (not always in the bathroom).
  • It’s a lot. But it’s also addictive in a way only other CRNAs really get.
  • Listen to Ep 2 of our podcast (Spotify) for what we wish we’d done differently. (So many things.)

Use that School Database before you commit. For real. Save yourself.

The Money Talk: Is CRNA Pay Really That Good?

Not gonna sugarcoat it. The money is solid. CRNAs can make anywhere from $120 to $250 per hour, depending on where and how you work. But if you go into this just for the paychecks, you’ll burn out before you even finish school. Ask any CRNA. most of us stay for the work itself (and the wild stories we swap in the break room).

Finding Your “Why”: Passion Required

If you’re not in it for the right reasons, it sucks. There’s really no sugarcoating that. You need to love patient care, be okay with pressure, and want to learn forever. (If you freeze during emergencies, you’ll hate this. Not judging. Just facts.)

  • Shadow at least one CRNA before you apply. It’s a must. Otherwise, you’re flying blind.
  • And don’t be afraid to admit if it’s not your thing. Honestly, this isn’t for everyone.

Our Final Thoughts

Being a CRNA is hard. It’s late nights, early mornings, and more responsibility than you thought possible (plus, surviving your worst semester ever). But if it calls to you, it’s the most rewarding, ridiculous, beautiful job there is. We made The CRNA Club to help you through the chaos. so you never have to do it alone. Check out our Learning Library and podcast for all the honest advice we wish we had. And really, start with the free School Database. We’re rooting for you.
