CRNA Schools in West Virginia: WVU and Charleston Compared

The CRNA schools in West Virginia come down to two accredited entry-to-practice nurse anesthesia programs: West Virginia University in Morgantown and the Charleston Area Medical Center/University of Charleston partnership in Charleston. Which nurse anesthesia programs are in West Virginia?

WVU and the CAMC/University of Charleston program. The COA directory uses the Charleston Area Medical Center School of Nurse Anesthesia name, and the current University of Charleston page explains that CAMC began its academic partnership with UC in Fall 2024. Count that partnership once. Older institutional names don't add extra current schools.

How do GPA and academic preparation differ?

WVU has two separate 3.0 thresholds, one for nursing GPA and one for the cumulative GPA across all college work you've attempted. So a strong recent nursing GPA doesn't erase earlier courses from its cumulative requirement. Its current application page says graduates of pass/fail institutions will be assigned 3.0 nursing and overall GPAs. That's WVU's stated approach, and it isn't a universal conversion rule for nurse anesthesia admissions. WVU qualifications

Charleston requires a completed BSN with at least a 3.0 final GPA. If you came through an RN-to-BSN route, it combines your associate and bachelor's degree GPAs. It also scores applicants using undergraduate GPA, experience and selected science grades. Its FAQ says an introductory chemistry, physics or microbiology course with a B or higher can earn additional points if you haven't already taken it, and it doesn't present all three as mandatory prerequisites. If you're an RN-to-BSN applicant, pull your associate-degree transcript before you estimate eligibility. Comparing a BSN-only average at one school with an all-college cumulative average at another won't give you a real answer. Which ICU experience, certifications and shadowing count?

WVU requires at least one year of current full-time critical care experience after orientation, with two to three years preferred. Telemetry, cardiac catheterization, operating room, PACU, interventional radiology and emergency department work don't meet its critical care definition. Charleston requires current ICU/critical care employment and at least a year of experience, documented on its experience form. It points applicants to the COA's definition of critical care, and you confirm your experience on its program experience form. WVU requires AHA BLS and ACLS, and PALS has to be completed before clinical activities. Charleston requires active BLS, ACLS and PALS documentation with the application, and it names CCRN, TNCC, CMC and CSC among additional certifications that can earn selection points. WVU's admission requirements don't include the CCRN, and neither school lists the GRE. A test that isn't listed isn't the same as a written waiver, so confirm the instructions for your cycle.

Shadowing is where the timing really differs. WVU strongly recommends shadowing before you apply but doesn't set a mandatory number of hours. Charleston doesn't require hours for initial review, but if you're invited to interview, you have to document eight hours before the interview date. Where will you attend class and clinical training?

At WVU, you'll mix online coursework with in-person work and clinical sites in several states. WVU combines online core doctoral coursework with anesthesia specialty classes, simulation and clinical practica. The current plan totals 88 credits, and clinical practicum begins in the third semester. Its affiliate list includes sites across West Virginia and in Maryland, Ohio and Pennsylvania, including Garrett Regional, Marietta Memorial, Conemaugh Memorial, Uniontown and UPMC Western Maryland. Charleston describes its program as in-seat, with extensive classroom and clinical training, so plan to live within reach of Charleston. Its first UC-partnered cohort entered in 2024 and is scheduled to graduate in August 2027. WVU's semester plan has different credit loads, including six-credit terms. Ask the university to apply its actual billing rules to the complete cohort schedule. Multiplying one full-time term by nine won't get you there. Charleston's three-year calculation assumes the current annual rate holds steady, so it isn't a fixed quote for Fall 2027. Which dates and outcomes should you track?

Track WVU's November dates, Charleston's December deadline and spring interview schedule, and each school's dated outcome report. WVU's Fall 2027 application schedule opens August 1 and closes November 1, with a separate November 15 transcript deadline. Its instructions allow unofficial transcripts for review but require official transcripts before a decision is final. Charleston requires Fall 2027 applications by December 14, 2026. It plans interview notifications in February 2027, on-campus interviews in March/April and decisions in early May.
